Project Zomboid Build 42 has finally reached the Stable branch. You no longer need to opt into Unstable to play it, and this is far more than the multiplayer test we covered last year. Build 42 reshapes Knox Country, pushes crafting much further, adds animals and gives long-running worlds more to work towards.
The biggest reason to start exploring again is the map. Knox Country has doubled in surface area, adding Ekron, Irvington and Brandenburg while giving Riverside, West Point, Rosewood, Muldraugh and other familiar towns extensive rebuilds. There are 1,400 new buildings and 20,000 new tiles, so returning players should find plenty that they do not recognise.
There is more variety in what you can find too. Houses can hide generated or hand-built basements, including bunkers and panic rooms, while Louisville now has skyscrapers reaching as high as 32 floors. Further out are places such as a Wild West tourist town, race track, docked steamboat, abandoned sanatorium and a much larger wilderness beyond the populated map.

Build 42 also makes surviving beyond the first few weeks more interesting. Crafting now covers skills such as blacksmithing, masonry, carving and knapping, with workstations, better recipe searches and the option to choose which ingredients a recipe uses. Farming follows the seasons, while animals can be hunted or raised for food and materials.
Fishing is much more involved now. Splashes show where fish are active, noise can frighten them away, and chum can draw them towards a chosen spot. It gives you something to watch and react to instead of simply dropping a line into the water and waiting.

Fire is one of the changes players will notice immediately. It has been rebuilt around the material that catches, affecting how flames spread, grow and burn. Starting one is no longer just a quick way to clear a horde; it can turn into a much bigger problem if it reaches the wrong building.
Corpse dragging is one of the biggest day-to-day changes in Build 42. You can pull bodies out of a base, doorway or road instead of awkwardly carrying them as inventory. Their weight tires your character and can leave a trail of blood behind, turning the clean-up after a horde into a job of its own.

There is plenty elsewhere too. Lighting has been overhauled, new game modes and challenges have arrived, firearms have been reworked, and the official mod manager makes it easier to organise dependencies and load order. Multiplayer has also had important work behind the scenes, with inventory transfers and timed actions now handled by the server, a wider anti-cheat system, fewer remote-player desyncs and a more useful server browser.
Build 42 also gives you more of Knox Country's story to piece together. Newspapers and flyers can be read, new television and radio stations fill in more of what happened, and annotated maps, vehicle liveries and random world stories leave clues throughout the map. It adds more to notice while looting and travelling without turning the game into a guided story.

Starting fresh is the important bit. Build 41 saves are not compatible with Build 42, while saves from the 42.19 Unstable build will not work with 42.20 because of the additional map content. Build 41 remains available through the legacy41 Steam branch, and unfinished 42.19 worlds can stay on the 42.19 branch.
If you are moving a multiplayer world over, take a backup, check that the mods your group relies on support the Stable build, and make sure the server and every player are using the same version. A clean world is the safest way to see the new map without dragging old save problems into it.
