What is s&box?

s&box is now available on Steam. Read our s&box launch overview for a quick look at Source 2 community games and dedicated servers.

s&box is Facepunch Studios' Source 2 creation platform and the spiritual successor to Garry's Mod. It is not built around one fixed mode. Players can jump between community-made games, while creators can build and publish their own projects using C#, hotloading, Workshop support and the wider s&box toolset.

That makes dedicated servers useful for more than just normal multiplayer. One server might run a sandbox map, another might host a shooter, and another might be used for testing a private project before it is ready for a wider audience. The exact setup depends on the game package and map you want to run.

The fun is in seeing what people make with it. You might spend one evening trying a small party game, then jump into a combat mode or physics sandbox the next. As more creators publish projects, s&box should become the kind of game that keeps changing depending on which community you follow.

Running your own s&box server gives your group a stable place to play, build or test without relying on one player's PC. Friends can join when they have time, creators can keep a project online for feedback, and communities can build around a regular server instead of starting from scratch each session.

On our hosting, you get access to the files and settings that matter, with backups available before you make bigger changes. If you are moving from local testing to a public server, or just trying to get the right package and map running, our team can help you get it set up properly.

For more information about the game itself, visit the s&box Steam page or the official dedicated server documentation.

s&box Hosting FAQ

Helpful answers about s&box servers, RAM, game packages, maps and setup.

Smaller private tests can usually start lower, while busier public servers or heavier packages may need more. You can start small and upgrade later, with custom servers available up to 24GB RAM.
That depends on the game package you run. Some modes are built for small groups, while others may support much larger public servers. The package itself, server settings and resource usage matter more than one fixed player cap.
Yes. s&box uses package identifiers for games and maps. If you know the package and map you want to run, we can help you set the startup values correctly.
Yes. A dedicated server is useful for testing with friends, keeping a project online for feedback, or running a private group before opening it up more widely.
A game server token can help your server keep the same Steam identity between restarts. It is not always required, but it is useful if you want a consistent server listing.
Yes. You get access to the files and settings needed to manage startup options, package values and other server configuration where supported.
Yes. You can change the hostname players see in the server list. Ports and query ports are allocated as part of the server setup, so you normally should not need to change them yourself.
No. Port forwarding is only something you need to worry about when self-hosting from home. With our hosting, the networking side is already handled for you.
s&box is still moving quickly, so updates are expected. You can update the server from the control panel, and we recommend taking a backup before bigger changes or package updates.
Not for a normal setup. If you already know the package and map you want, we can help get the startup values in place. More advanced creator projects may still need some project-specific configuration.
Facepunch calls it the spiritual successor to Garry's Mod, but it is also a broader Source 2 creation platform with its own game library, editor and publishing tools.
