Update 8, Forging the Path, is built to tighten the game up ahead of the full release this autumn. It is not mainly a content drop; it is a systems update. Combat, skill progression, and gear have all been reworked to make fights feel more deliberate, builds more meaningful, and upgrades less throwaway.
The headline change is the physical combat overhaul. Melee is now more than just spamming light attacks. Every melee weapon gets a heavy attack (hold attack) that hits harder and chunks stun, and several weapon families have refreshed attack chains so they actually match the weapon fantasy.

Update 8 also introduces special abilities tied to a new resource called Focus. Regular attacks build Focus; when the bar fills you can fire off a weapon special for a big moment of impact. The same Focus system also powers new special moves for pickaxes and woodcutting axes, so your moment-to-moment play feels punchier even when you are not fighting.
Enemies are smarter about how they notice you as well. There is now an advanced awareness system where mobs can become suspicious from noise and start searching before they fully commit. It is easier to thin out a camp without instantly pulling everything, and you get clearer feedback on when you are about to be spotted.

Movement and survivability get tweaks too. Dodge rolls and blink now have short i-frame windows, and there is a new skill that lets you choose your dodging mode. Camera behaviour has been improved in combat too, including better target lock reliability.

The skill tree has had a full pass. You can zoom it out for a proper overview, many skills are now upgradeable, and the structure is designed to get you to meaningful branches faster without making early points feel wasted. There are new skills across multiple playstyles, including more ways to raise max health and new specialisations tied to the Focus system. Keen has also moved some important quality-of-life picks earlier in the tree, including making Double Jump one of the first abilities you can unlock.

Finally, gear progression is cleaner: armours, shields, wards, rings, pickaxes, and woodcutting axes are now upgradeable with runes. Upgrades are handled by the crafting survivors for each combat class, so your favourite kit can stay relevant rather than being replaced every tier.
