The legendary modpack, Minecraft Eternal is an old but gold modpack we thought we'd revisit as the newly released Minecraft Eternal 2 modpack had been released. Featuring over 300+ mods on the Minecraft version 1.12.2, this pack is a goliath and trendsetter for modpacks of its time. Being one of the bigger packs to include a quest book with 750+ quests, a shop, and guides for most of the large mods included in the pack.
Just a small snippet, even just one section of the questbook is enough to make the game struggle to render everything. The questbook being such a staple of the pack and setting the future for all modpacks that came after. Maintaining the balance between technically difficult and easy for casual modded players, this pack is amazing for all types of players. Having mighty mods such as Thaumcraft, Mekanism, and Astral Sorcery and… Well, Rats!
The modpack feels very kitchen-sink despite its modcount, most mods remaining unmodified as a whole with only a few recipes being modified for the pack. Most of the mods play together very well, making other mods significantly easier to get into. Making an ME system with Applied Energistics makes getting into craft-heavy mods like Mekanism and the Thermal series much easier; while Thaumcraft makes resource gathering and management significantly easier due to the unique properties of its crafting and the Crucible.
The pack has a very long list of pros and cons, most of which being pros. The biggest setback of the modpack was aimed to be alleviated in Minecraft Eternal 2 - being on an older version. This version of Minecraft runs significantly worse than its newer counterparts with fewer features, making it a significant limiter for improvements.
Startup times of the pack without any extra work or optimisations can take up to 10 minutes on even the highest end of machines, with only 300 mods. Newer packs with 600+ mods can take a tenth of that time without any prior work. Despite this, Minecraft Eternal still holds up as a juggernaut of content in a Minecraft modpack, the playtime of it spanning hundreds of hours for even the most dedicated of players.
Maintaining a healthy balance of fast early-game progression with a slower, more meticulous later game allows for players to jump into the best part of the game for most. Mods like Tinker's Construct allow players powerful, ever-increasing in strength tools early on. Roguelike Dungeons allow for frequent spawning, easy to grab loot.
The quest book serves as a miniature guide for most mods, allowing you to follow the tree and get into some mods you otherwise may never consider trying. Every mod in the pack seems to fit in perfectly for every niche and is straightforward to get into because of the quest book.
Overall, we heavily recommend you give this pack a try if you love heavily technical and thorough modpacks, as it stands strong even with all the good options on newer versions.
