Valheim 1.0 and the Deep North Are Here

After more than five years in Early Access, Valheim has reached 1.0 with the Deep North completing the world beyond the Ashlands. Deep snow, slippery ice and ruined settlements shape the final biome, while the cold changes how you travel, fight and build rather than simply giving the existing game a white coat of paint.
Beyond the new landscape, more than ten creatures have been added for groups to learn and eventually farm for materials. The Gammeltroll appears alongside Elaking, Hexen, Krigen and several far less solid-looking Pulp enemies, while moose can be tamed and ridden and seals occupy the frozen coast. Getting through all of that eventually leads to Kall Fimbulbringer, the boss waiting at the end of the biome.

Breaking a Jotun crystal in one of the new dungeons allows the threat to spread beyond the Deep North. Invasions can freeze parts of existing biomes and bring Jotun enemies into them, even reaching the Meadows, so stopping their advance becomes part of the route towards opening the gate to Valheim's final boss.
Travelling further out can now uncover alternate versions of earlier biomes, and mysterious idols found across the world can be carried to the hidden Forge of Potential for another route into stronger equipment. New events, locations and cinematics tie those journeys together, giving an established group reasons to revisit more than one patch of unexplored northern land.

Once the group starts bringing those new materials home, there is a genuinely large equipment tier waiting to use them. More than 40 weapons cover Nord, Frostfire and Thunderblood versions of the familiar weapon types, joined by new bombs, ammunition, shields and staves. The grappling hook is the more unusual addition, opening a new way across the Deep North's steep terrain instead of merely adding another damage number.
Rather than forcing everyone through the same upgrade, four armour sets provide different routes for Protectors, Vanguards and Callers as well as players who want the cold-weather Lox Fur set. Two capes, two trinkets and the Crown of Valheim sit around them, backed by more than 30 crafting materials and over 20 foods that give a larger group plenty to divide between its different builds.

Building a permanent home in the snow first means clearing the ground with the new shovel, but the reward is a set of more than 80 new pieces. Timber and decorated timber beams, Scalewood walls, steep roof sections, ice blocks and several drawbridges provide enough useful shapes to make a northern settlement feel deliberate rather than like a temporary box placed beside the next fight.
Underneath the visible additions, the new chunked save system only writes the parts of a world that have changed, which should improve save times and make an interrupted write less likely to damage everything. Iron Gate has also worked on world generation, terrain network traffic, textures and audio, while a new draw-distance option lets each player choose between performance and a longer view across the group's larger builds.

Whether an existing world is worth keeping depends mainly on how much of its northern edge the group has already explored. New biome content can generate in untouched areas, so a world where nobody has travelled into the Deep North has the best chance of producing the intended layout, although Iron Gate still recommends starting again for the complete 1.0 experience. Whichever route you take, make a backup before updating and agree on it before someone sails north and generates more terrain.
If the server uses BepInEx, Valheim Plus or individual mods, check every project before treating the update like a normal restart. Valheim still has no official mod support, and a release this large can leave dependencies waiting for compatible builds, so keep the world and configuration backed up and be ready to run without anything outdated. The server and every player also need to be on the same game version before reconnecting.
With full crossplay now covering Windows, Linux, Mac, Xbox, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, the same persistent world can still hold up to ten players across the complete platform line-up. On one of our Valheim servers, create a backup in the control panel, stop the server and run Steam Update before starting it again, then check the console and confirm that everyone has updated their own copy. Our Valheim server update guide covers that process, while the Valheim mods guide explains where mod files and dependencies fit when the setup is not vanilla.
