Don’t Starve Together is Klei’s co-op version of The Constant, where surviving the first few nights is only the start of the problem. The group needs food, light, tools, science, somewhere safe enough to call a base and a plan for when the season changes and the world starts being difficult in a new way.

It works because everyone ends up with a job, even if nobody agreed to one. Someone is gathering logs, someone is trying to cook anything useful, someone has gone looking for beefalo, and someone is absolutely going to open a suspicious thing they should have left alone. Winter, summer, caves, ruins, bosses and the ocean all give the server something else to prepare for.

A shared server makes sense once the world has history. Farms, chests, crock pots, roads, boats, cave entrances and boss prep all take time, and it is much nicer when the save is there for the group instead of sitting on one player’s computer. Friends can join when they are free, sort resources, repair the base or get ready for the next run without rebuilding from nothing.

Caves and ruins are worth mentioning because they are not just another checkbox. Running the forest and caves together means the game is effectively running linked worlds, which is heavier than a simple surface-only save. If your group wants the full Don’t Starve Together experience, hosting it properly matters.

Mods are a big part of DST too. Steam Workshop has server mods, client mods, new characters, interface changes, worldgen tweaks and admin tools, so a private server can be kept close to vanilla or shaped around the way your group wants to play.
