Astroneer is a co-op space sandbox from System Era where a small landing site slowly turns into a proper base. You start by finding Compound and Resin, printing a few platforms, stretching oxygen tethers out from the shelter and plugging machines together so the place can actually do something.

As you play and build out the base, the terrain tool becomes a huge part of the game. You dig into the landscape to find materials, shape paths through caves, flatten areas for building and generally make a mess of the planet in whatever way helps. Almost every part of the terrain can be changed, which is what makes Astroneer feel a bit different from a normal survival craft game.

Laterite is one of the key early resources, smelting into Aluminium for equipment such as buggies, rail parts and useful base pieces. This is the point where the game starts opening up a bit. You can build vehicles, make ridiculous tracks across the terrain, tidy up transport routes or just race around because someone has obviously built a ramp where they should not have.

Once the basics are down, automation starts becoming a bigger part of the game. More resources, better production and less doing the same jobs by hand over and over again. From there, the world keeps growing into something more useful, more chaotic and usually much harder to keep tidy than anyone planned.

With your own Astroneer server, friends can join and leave when they like. Someone can jump on to finish a base project, move resources around, prepare for the next planet or keep building while everyone else is away. It means the group is not waiting for one person to be online and hosting from their PC before anything can happen.
