The new Minecraft update, 1.21, has finally been given the title of 'Tricky Trials'. Since the official trailer was released to Minecraft’s YouTube channel, it was also announced that each new music track coming with the update is already available on music streaming services. This was also announced shortly after the release of 1.20.5, titled ‘Armoured Paws.’ You can read our article about this here.
The trailer itself announced many new features, most notably of all being related to the title of the update in the Oblivion Trials, which will also presumably be found within the new dungeon type, the Trial Chamber. This was also revealed alongside the Vault, which players will likely be able to access upon completion of the Trials themselves.
The main goal for players during the Oblivion Trials will be to destroy the Trial Spawner, which will also eject a key to the Vault. During the Trial Chamber, you will also be given the chance to collect a new block type, the Tuff block.
The Mobs
Within the Trials, players will encounter a new Mob type, called 'The Breeze;' a cyclone-like monster that seems to have a lot more aerial mobility than the previous flying monsters, like the Phantom. Their body style and appearance might also suggest that their abilities are similar to the effects of one of the new items, the Wind Charge.
The second new Mob revealed by the trailer is called 'The Bogged,' whose appearance is very similar to that of the Drowned, and will likely function in a similar way, perhaps as a skeleton-style ranged mob that will not hit quite as hard as trident-wielding Drowned.
The Items
There were a plethora of new items announced in the trailer for Tricky Trials, one of which being a new weapon in the Mace. It is also the first weapon that uses height to its advantage, as the further you fall before striking an enemy with the Mace, the more damage it will do. This was also shown to have the trade-off of a high-risk factor to the wielder, as fall damage has been the bane of many players’ existences, however hitting an enemy with the Mace from a height also completely negates the damage to the player, giving us a useful high risk, high reward weapon type.
Another announced item was the Wind Charge, something which appears to have the simple function of releasing a powerful gale of wind that can shove mobs. While its functions may be somewhat niche and situational, sending an attacker flying from the top of a mountain will always have a great deal of satisfaction.
Perhaps the most coveted new item will be the Crafter, which as the name suggests, crafts items for the player, and will be compatible with Hoppers and Droppers. It will function as a new type of crafting table, allowing items to be automatically created when the correct recipe is inputted. This is not to be confused with a duplicator, as it appears that the Crafter is a more industrial version of the traditional Crafting Table for players that are Redstone-savvy.
Other items announced were predominantly aesthetic in nature; copper lamps will be a new block-style light source, as well as new copper blocks. The addition of armour trims is a small but incredibly appreciated addition as it will also give players new dimensions of customisation for their armour sets, as well as extra options for pottery.
Updates for Minecraft are always hotly anticipated and deliver to a great deal of community praise, and it seems that the Tricky Trials update will be no different. With the addition of the Mace and new Mob types on top of everything else announced, it seems like the cube world of Minecraft is set to remain ever-growing.
