The latest update to Minecraft, which is version 1.20.5 otherwise known as the Armored Paws Update, has been released and is available on our Minecraft Server Hosting right now! There has been a load of new features and improvements, but the main thing we’re all waiting to see is the Wolf Armour, right?!
Before we get to that, on the technical side, there has been a change to how the Minecraft Java Edition spawn chunks work, first implemented in Snapshot 24W03A. This change makes an in-game rule allowing you to set the spawn radius with a command. The default radius is now 2 (98% smaller) and creates a 48x48 block radius around the worlds spawn that is protected – if you prefer the larger spawn radius, you can change this back to 10.
Meet the Armadillo
Last year the Mojang put a vote to the Minecraft community with three new exiting mobs to choose from, The Crab, The Penguin and the one that the majority chose, the Armadillo. This exciting new creature adds a new material to the game called Scute, which can be used to craft amour for wolves which we’ll get to shortly.
You can find Armadillos in Savannas and Badlands biomes. To admire or capture them, you need to make sure you’re not on a mount, sprinting or riding a vehicle, or they’ll roll up into a ball! To tempt them towards you simply hold a spider eye in your hand. They seem to love this part of a spider too, as feeding two adult Armadillos with them will make them breed. Feeding a spider eye to the offspring will make it grow up faster, just like bone-meal does to wheat!
Spiders and Cave spiders are scared to lose their eye and will run away from Armadillos that are not in a rolled-up state. When rolled up, they won’t walk, eat, and cannot be tempted by food. The shell protects it, reducing damage or even allowing it to fully resist weak attacks.
Wolf Amour
What we’ve all been waiting almost a decade for, now our Wolves can be protected like the Horses! Wolf Armour has been added into the game and can be crafted using Scute from the Armadillo, and just like Leather Armour it can be dyed to your liking. The Wolf Armour will protect the Wolf from most damage until it loses durability and breaks. THe Armour shows signs of wear and tear visibly, so you’ll know if it needs to be repaired – which can be done by using Scute on the wolf.
Wolf Variants
They’ve added quite a few new Wolf types, 8 if you want to be exact, into Minecraft which is determined by the biome that they spawn in. The variant we’re all familiar with called the Pale Wolf is still around, you can find them now in the Taiga Biome. Here’s the full list of the new additional Wolves that are in Minecraft now:
- Woods Wolf
A variant that spawns in the Forest biome. This will be the dominant Wolf variant that you will be able to find in the Overworld, since the Forest biome is widespread.
- Ashen Wolf
A variant that spawns in the Snowy Taiga biome.
- Black Wolf
A variant that spawns in the Old Growth Pine Taiga biome, in smaller packs of 2 to 4.
- Chestnut Wolf
A variant that spawns in the Old Growth Spruce Taiga biome, in smaller packs of 2 to 4.
- Rusty Wolf
A variant that spawns in a new location for Wolves, the Sparse Jungle biome, in smaller packs of 2 to 4.
- Spotted Wolf
A variant that spawns in a new location for Wolves, the Savanna Plateau biome, in larger packs of 4 to 8.
- Striped Wolf
A variant that spawns in a new location for Wolves, the Wooded Badlands biome, in larger packs of 4 to 8.
- Snowy Wolf
A variant that spawns in the Grove biome. This lone Wolf is a rare type, as it always walks alone.
New Achievements
If you’re an achievement hunter, there are four new achievements that have been implemented! As you might expect, these relate to the Wolves and the Armadillos, and they are:
- Isn't It Scute?
Get Armadillo Scutes from an Armadillo using a Brush.
- Shear Brilliance
Remove Wolf Armor from a Wolf using Shears.
- Good as New
Repair a damaged Wolf Armor using Armadillo Scutes.
- The Whole Pack
Tame one of each Wolf variant.
